Boughton Engineering is set to unveil the UK’s first DAF XD Electric skip loader at this year’s RWM Expo – the first of four new all-electric vehicles commissioned by Biffa.
The new vehicles combine DAF’s XD Electric 4×2 chassis with Boughton’s British-manufactured Power-Reach PR18 skip loader, bringing together proven waste handling equipment with the latest battery-electric vehicle technology.
The first vehicle has now been completed and will be on display at RWM Expo. A second is currently in build, with a further two to follow.
Crucially for skip operations, the move to electric has been achieved without compromising the practical capabilities of the vehicle. The XD Electric offers a build height comparable with an equivalent diesel vehicle and can be supplied with a compact chassis length. The Biffa specification is capable of handling an 7-tonne skip and offers an anticipated operating range of approximately 150 miles in loaded, mixed-work conditions.
Power comes from a 220kW PACCAR EX-D1 electric motor and 315kWh battery system, with a 650V e-PTO powering the skip loader equipment electrically. Charging at up to 325kW DC is supported, with 22kW AC charging also available, making overnight depot charging a practical option.
The XD Electric also achieves a four-star Direct Vision Standard rating, even in its full construction specification.
Fitted to the chassis is Boughton’s flagship Power-Reach PR18 skip loader. Designed for 18-tonne GVW applications, the British-manufactured PR18 was developed with a focus on functionality, safety, serviceability and reliability, and features independent telescopic lift arms and stabiliser legs, powered tip hooks and heavy-duty protection for key components.

The four electric skip loaders mark the latest development in a relationship between Boughton and Biffa that spans decades. Earlier this year, Boughton announced the production of a further 57 vehicles for Biffa, comprising 30 skip loaders, 18 hook loaders and nine trailers.
The first new DAF XD Electric Power-Reach PR18 will be on display on the Boughton Engineering stand CT-H350 at RWM Expo, giving visitors the opportunity to see the UK-first vehicle at close quarters and speak to the Boughton team about its latest waste handling equipment.
